Main Product Description

The Vortex Tool 9689 is a two-flute, double-edge compression router bit with chipbreakers developed for dense plywood and combination-core materials. Its compression geometry brings opposing cutting directions together along the cutting edge to support clean top and bottom panel faces when the transition is positioned correctly within the workpiece.

Vortex uses an improved chipbreaker pattern to shorten the chip and help reduce the pulling of individual plies during routing. This configuration is intended to improve chip control and edge quality in demanding panel applications where ordinary finishing geometry may allow long chips or fibre layers to lift.

The verified 9689 dimensions are a 1/2-inch cutting-edge diameter, 1-inch cutting-edge length, 1/2-inch shank diameter, 3-inch overall length, and 0.250-inch upcut section. Correct collet condition, shank engagement, tool projection, compression-transition depth, workholding, feed, speed, and chip evacuation remain essential to production performance.

Product Highlights

01

Two-Flute Compression Geometry

The double-edge cutting layout combines upcut and downcut action to support clean opposing panel faces when set correctly in the material.

02

Improved Chipbreaker Pattern

The chipbreaker design shortens chip formation to help reduce the pulling of plies in dense plywood and combination-core products.

03

Verified Compact Configuration

A 1/2-inch diameter, 1-inch cutting length, and 3-inch overall length provide a compact production format for compatible routing systems.

Compatibility & Installation Notes

Use a clean, undamaged precision 1/2-inch collet or compatible holder and maintain adequate shank engagement without clamping on the flute transition. Position the 0.250-inch upcut section so the compression transition remains correctly located within the workpiece during the cut. Confirm tool projection, spindle condition, rotation, workholding, programmed depth, ramping strategy, feed rate, spindle speed, chip evacuation, and machine clearance before production. Replace the tool if the cutting edges, chipbreakers, shank, or carbide body show damage.

Controlled Compression Routing

Vortex Tool 9689 combines solid-carbide construction, two-flute compression geometry, and an improved chipbreaker pattern in a 1/2-inch-diameter tool configured for dense plywood and combination-core routing.

Correct collet fit, transition depth, tool projection, cutting parameters, workholding, and chip evacuation are essential for realizing the intended chip control, panel-edge quality, and tool service life.
