Mortise-Specific Geometry
The 0.250-inch upcut section is designed for groove cutting and compatible workpieces 5/8 inch thick or less.

A Vortex Tool Series 3100M “The Viper” two-flute solid-carbide mortise compression spiral with a 1/2-inch cutting diameter, 1-inch cutting-edge length, 0.250-inch upcut length, 1/2-inch shank, and 3-inch overall length. The mortise geometry is designed for groove cutting and compatible materials 5/8 inch thick or less while helping protect both faces of the workpiece.
This Series 3100M Viper router bit combines upcut and downcut flute sections with a 1/4-inch mortise upcut to help prevent chipping or fuzzing on the top and bottom of compatible thin panel materials and mortise grooves.
Designed for compatible CNC routers and routing machines using a correctly sized 1/2-inch collet or toolholder. Confirm spindle rotation, tool projection, workpiece thickness, groove depth, RPM, feed, workholding, and chip evacuation before production use.
The Vortex Tool 3189 belongs to the Series 3100M “The Viper” two-flute mortise-compression range. Its upcut and downcut flute sections compress the cut toward the centre of the workpiece, helping reduce chipping or fuzzing on both the top and bottom edges.
Series 3100M is designed for mortise cuts or for cutting material 5/8 inch thick or less. Vortex defines mortise cuts as grooves typically cut to a depth equal to or slightly less than the tool diameter, and the 0.250-inch upcut section is configured for this thin-material and groove-cutting role.
The verified 3189 configuration uses a 1/2-inch cutting-edge diameter, 1-inch cutting-edge length, 1/2-inch shank, 3-inch overall length, 0.250-inch upcut section, two flutes, and right-hand rotation. Vortex also lists a separate left-hand version, so rotation must be confirmed before installation.
Technical Specifications
The 0.250-inch upcut section is designed for groove cutting and compatible workpieces 5/8 inch thick or less.
Combined upcut and downcut flute sections compress the cut toward the workpiece centre to support clean edges on both faces.
Vortex Viper geometry is designed for productive compression routing, extended sharpening life, and consistent performance through the tool’s useful service.
Confirm a clean, undamaged 1/2-inch collet or compatible holder, correct right-hand spindle rotation, adequate shank engagement, safe tool projection, machine RPM limits, feed rate, groove depth, panel support, workholding, and chip evacuation before use. Program the toolpath so the 0.250-inch upcut section and compression transition are positioned correctly within the workpiece. For mortise work, groove depth is typically equal to or slightly less than the 1/2-inch tool diameter.
Vortex Tool 3189 combines Series 3100M Viper two-flute mortise-compression geometry with a verified 1/2-inch cutting diameter, 1-inch cutting length, 0.250-inch upcut, 1/2-inch shank, and 3-inch overall length.
The solid-carbide design is intended for compatible mortise grooves and thin double-sided laminated panels where clean top and bottom edges are important production goals.
